WARLORD & BATTLEI am a big comic fan, but when I was young, the funny titles didn't interest me much. What I loved was war stories. I grew up with Warlord, Battle and Commando Picture Library.
Every week I would look forward to the adventures of Lord Peter Flint, and devour strips like Johnny Red, Darkies Mob, Major Eazy, D-Day Dawson, The Rat Pack, Union Jack Jackson, Kampfgruppe Falken and, of course Charley's War.
Not many war-stories in comics these days, but Garth Ennis has, in addition to the frankly childish (but brilliantly funny) Adventures In The Rifle Brigade, written some excellent tales in his War Stories
(Vertigo/DC) and Battlefields
(Dynamite) series, and is a well-known fan of the genre.
